Throughout history, sailing has been instrumental in the development of civilization giving humans, and now frogs, greater mobility than travel over land. Sailing can be used for trade, transport, warfare, and fishing. During the last century, sailing became a hobby, as well as a sport. The earliest representation of a ship under sail appears on a painted disc found in Kuwait. It is believed to date back to 5000 to 5500 BCE Polynesian sailors travel vast distances over open water in outrigger canoes and used navigation systems such as stick charts. Advances in sailing from the Middle Ages on enabled Arab, Chinese, Indian, and European explorers to make longer voyages into regions with extreme weather and climate conditions. Improvements in sails, masts, rigging, as well as improvements in marine navigation allowed for more certainty when sailing long distances. From he 15th century onward, European ships went farther north, stayed longer, and eventually began to explore the Pacific Northwest and Western Arctic. Sailing has contributed to many of the world's greatest explorations.
It was only a matter of time before sailing became a recreational sport. Recreational sailing can be either singlehanded or can be crewed by family, friends, or club members. These sailing vessels can proceed on their own or be part of a flotilla, with other like-minded sailors. Now that I know a little more of sailing's history, I'm ready to take a few lessons. Dad is very excited and I think we'll make a great crew of captain and first mate. Although learning the basics of sailing is easy, it can take years to become an accomplished sailor.
After our lessons, Dad and I will be part of a small crew on-board a smaller sailing vessel. We will participate in a popular summertime activity known as gunkholing. It consists of taking taking a series of day sails to out-of-the-way places along the coast, anchoring overnight while enjoying family activities like swimming, fishing, and and exploring. While we aren't much into fishing, I'm sure we'll be able to catch a lot of bugs and the swimming is sure to be excellent. This is going to be an awesome adventure that we'll both remember for years to come.
I hope your weekend plans will include an aquatic activity. The weather is beautiful, the water is warm, and life is good. Whatever fun activities you have planned with your family I hope you have clear sailing ahead. I look forward to seeing you all back here on Monday.
Happy weekend!
