Like many of you, I have dreams and goals. And I have procrastinated for a long time now; I can't seem to make myself take that first, important step. Then, this morning, I got the bright idea to look up and see what helpful hints were out there that might propel myself forward towards achieving my personal goals. What I found wasn't a list of "Do's"...but, rather, it was a list of "Don'ts". I hope you'll find them as helpful as I did.
1. Don't wait until the situation is perfect. It won't ever be. There'll always be something that isn't quite right. 2. Don't wait for others to agree with you. It's your dream, right? You can ask for opinions and advice but, ultimately, it's going to be your your decision. If this is what YOU want, then go for it. 3. Don't wait until your skill is good. We often think that we have to be good at doing something first. The truth is, most people, and frogs, too, learn as they go....trial and error. We can learn much more by doing than by waiting.
Ok, so we got the big DON'TS out of the way, but that doesn't mean that there aren't also a few important things that we need to DO, as well.
1. Do believe in your dream. Believing in your dream is essential for motivation. If I didn't believe that I could write books for kids...or even write a daily blog...I wouldn't have been motivated enough to crawl out of my warm bed and sit at my computer every morning. The truth is, we simply can't fool our hearts. Deep down inside we know whether or not we can believe in our dream. Ask yourself, "Is this something that I can put my heart and soul into?" 2. Do visualize your dream. Can you see how the world will look, in glorious detail and technicolor, when you achieve your dream? Can you FEEl the excitement, the energy? Feels pretty good, doesn't it? 3. Do expect a hard way ahead. No one ever said that achieving your dream would be easy. Why? Because it isn't. Having the right expectations from the get-go will make your journey much more pleasant...and realistic. Know upfront that there will be challenges, but if you believe in your dream, you'll find away through, around, or over over what ever obstacles you'll encounter. You can do it. You know you can! 4. Take one bite at a time. Or, as I like to say, take one stair at a time. Dreams, like beautiful stairways, should be BIG. Know, and understand, that not everything has to be accomplished today. It may feel that way, but dreams are far more easily accomplished one bite, or one step, at a time. Divide the tasks (whatever it'll take to accomplish your dream) into small enough portions that you don't become overwhelmed.
Marlin Luther King said, " Faith is taking the first step even when you can' see the whole staircase." Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into visible. So, go ahead...take that step. The rest of your journey is waiting to unfold....
