I love having company. It gives me the opportunity to show my visitors the places that I call home...and routinely take for granted. My second-cousin, Elena la Rana, is here for an extended stay and it's so nice to be able to show her Land of Lily Pad; it's her first trip out of her native Columbia. Ever notice how the places that we thought were special as a kid...or when we first moved to town..become mundane and commonplace? Over time, these places just fade into the woodwork and when it's time for our holiday, we want to go someplace else. It's true for everyone. An interesting note here; other folks pay loads of money to visit your city, town, or lily pad each year and here you...you lucky devil...you get to live here year 'round! Stay-cations became popular for awhile, mostly out of necessity, but have recently fallen out-of-favor. Most of you already know that I love, and advocate, travel but every so often, it's kind of fun to stay home and play tourist in your own hometown. That's what I'm doing this weekend; taking Elana out to visit the local sites and dine in our many great restaurants... the same ones I used to love but now, largely ignore. It'll be like seeing them again for the first time. The nice thing is that you don't need to have company to play tourist. It's a great activity to do by yourself, or with family or friends. If you're looking for something new to do this weekend, why not go out and see your community with fresh eyes? The best part is that, in the evening, you come home and sleep in your own bed...and there's never any jet-lag! I wish you all a pleasant "trip" around your own, exciting town this weekend. Enjoy the journey and I'll see you back here on Monday.

We've all heard the old saying, "Good things come in the smallest packages." I know my mom reminds me of this every Christmas, as I gravitate to those BIG, shiney boxes under the tree that are just begging to be unwrapped. But, I can honestly say, that my favorite presents have come in those small, less glamorous boxes that are discreetly nestled among the tree branches. So why am I mentioning this onthe first of October? Because the whole "good thing" concept can applied to any day of the year...not just Christmas and birthdays. Fall is officially here. The days are cooler. The sky is clearer..and the leaves are turning magnificent shades of red, orange, and yellow. This is the perfect time of year to go for a leisurely walk...or hop...through the woods and just enjoy being. You know what I mean; no worries, no cares, no thoughts..just being one with Mother Nature. This brings, at least to me, the greatest joy I know. Those few, precious hours away from it all, when communing with nature, is the only job I have. Why not plan to spend some quality time this weekend visiting with Mother Nature and enjoying the not-so-small gifts that she gives us every day? Unwrap each one slowly and savor the moment. For these are memories, and the presents, that you'll cherish the most. And you just never know what you might see along the way...
